1. The region A study in contrasts, the geography of the Region Rhone-Alps is replete with plains, foothills and very high mountains, as well as several well-known lakes: Lake Bourget (France's largest), Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva. The Rhone Alps has six natural parks, more than any other region in France. Although its history dates back more than 2,000 years, the region has a robust technology sector, with 9 universities, 31 graduate business schools and many international high-tech research centers. Its 5.65 million population make it the second most-populated region in France. Only the Ile-de-France with Paris at its center has a larger population.

The Tower of Crest is the highest keep in France (52 m.). Originally a 13th and early 14th century castle, the tower became part of a larger fortress and escaped destruction ordered by King Louis XIII in 1632. From the 15th to 19th centuries it became a prison.
